"Words will never be able to express how thankful I am for everything you have done for us. There should be more people like you out there that are willing to do what it takes to keep children safe and happy. You went above and beyond for 'Jack' and for that, I can never be more grateful. Thank you for showing me that there are people like you."
"Sarah," Jack's aunt
Earlier this year, CLC Staff Attorney Porsha Buresh was appointed to advocate for the best interests of 5-year-old “Jack.” During her investigation, Ms. Buresh learned that Jack’s unmarried parents had a violent relationship. Jack was also exposed to their substance abuse.
Jack’s mom had a series of boyfriends. At one point, Jack and his mother lived in her boyfriend’s family compound where a convicted sex offender also lived. This home exposed Jack to more domestic violence. This environment was clearly injurious to his mental and physical health.
We did not want Jack to join the 70% of child domestic violence victims to become abused or an abuser as an adult, or one of the 90% of US prison inmates who grew up in violent households.
The District Court Judge hearing the case agreed with Ms. Buresh’s recommendation that Jack should live with his aunt in a stable, healthy and loving home. Jack and his aunt, “Sarah,” now live a safe and happy life together.
