Why it matters - the impact of our Custody Advocacy Program

Every day the staff attorneys at Children’s Law Center (CLC) hear from children like Jamal, an 8-year-old boy trapped in a toxic home environment. Jamal’s name and details of his situation have been changed, but his story is the same as the stories of the hundreds of children we have served through CLC’s Custody Advocacy Program.

Jamal’s mother has a history of addiction and mental health issues, in addition to being a victim of verbal and physical violence inflicted by her boyfriend in the presence of Jamal. This environment has been deeply scarring for Jamal, and he is currently having academic and behavioral challenges at school and showing signs of emotional trauma, such as frequent nightmares.

Jamal’s parents went to District Court regarding a Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVPO) and custody of Jamal. The District Court Judge appointed CLC as Guardian ad Litem (GAL) to advocate for Jamal’s best interests in court. Our staff attorney GAL conducted a thorough investigation, met with Jamal, got to know him and built a trusting relationship. CLC prepared an unbiased report with recommendations for the judge addressing a safe home environment and services to ensure Jamal’s physical and mental well-being.

The role of a CLC attorney is so important for children like Jamal who have no other voice in legal proceedings which greatly impact their lives. We want to provide Jamal with an advocate, dedicated just to him, who can explain what is happening, listen to his experience and needs, and advocate for his best interests.

Our Custody Advocacy work is imperative to ensuring Jamal has a safe home tonight, and a chance at a bright future tomorrow. Help us change the trajectory of Jamal’s life.
